October 6, 2020
Cyber Diplomacy - a Swiss Perspective

About the Webinar

You must have seen the term cyber diplomacy being used repeatedly and increasingly by major actors in global politics. What is cyber diplomacy? It is a new dimension in international relations and can be regarded as the use of diplomatic resources to secure national interestsIt is actually a new phenomenon, thus not much has been mentioned on the ways in which the nature of cyber diplomacy has been influenced cyber sphere.

It is no secret that cyber operations have become a weapon of preference for many states in their pursuit of foreign policy goals. They present the ability to steal data and even support military operations at comparatively low risk. The cyber conflict has become a strategic issue that demands a concrete response by the government. For Switzerland, one of the most digitized and ICT-dependent countries in the world, this threat has a potentially wide reach. Since state actors hold almost limitless technical possibilities, they can cause much more harm than we think.

In this webinar, Daniel Seiler, Deputy Head, Office for Cyber Foreign and Security Policy at Federal Department of Foreign Affairs in Switzerlandwill discuss the concept of cyber diplomacy and how it emerged into an international practice that is attempting to build a cyber international society. He will also touch on the fact that the European Union takes solid actions and implements projects to reinforce the efforts of international organisations, while fostering its own values.
